1st Graders are excited about learning more

The Literacy Committee organized and funded a Dublin AM Rotarian Visiting Author Event at Daniel Wright Elementary on May 25th.The author was Carole Gerber, a resident of Powell. She discussed how she came up with her ideas and what went into writing, illustrating and getting a book published. Carole's focus was on poetry. Some were poems that were riddles and some were two person poems that were written to be read by two people. She then discussed how she came up with the idea for the featured book, Seeds, Bees and Butterflies. Carole volunteers at the Stratford Ecological Center, where the First Graders will have a Field Trip on Thursday May 26th. It was her love of nature and creating poems to teach about some of nature's mysteries that turned into this book.  Each First Grader received a signed hardback copy of Seeds, Bees and Butterflies.

Carole also did her presentation to the Third, Fourth and Fifth Graders and the a separate presentation to the Second Graders in the afternoon. The response from all of the classes was enthusiastic with what looks like a lot of future literary giants.
After lunch Rotary also sponsored a presentation by the Franklin Conservatory Park on Butterflies. Two representatives from the Conservatory met with each First Grade class separately with a lot of interaction by the children.
The Literacy Committee felt like the integration of two resources in out community will have a far reaching impact on the children beyond yesterdays event. I think children will have more interest in trying their own writing, but also going to the conservatory to see the 2000 butterflies.
